I. GRAMMAR
The structure “…đỡ + Adjective” expresses the decrease in a negative state or character of a person or a thing.
II. HOW TO USE
…đỡ + Adjective…
For example:
Hôm nay trời đỡ lạnh hơn hôm qua. (Today it is less cold than yesterday.)
Tôi nghe nhạc cho đỡ buồn. (I listen to music to relieve sadness.)
Anh đã đỡ đau chưa? (Have you had any pain relief yet?)
In addition, the word “đỡ” is a word with many meanings.
For example:
Đỡ (Verb): Keep it below to keep from falling.
Giá đỡ (shelf)
Làm rơi lọ hoa may mà đỡ lại được. (Dropped the flower vase but luckily I was able to catch it.)
Đỡ cho bệnh nhân nằm xuống. (Help the patient lie down).
Đỡ (Verb): Reach out to receive something cherished or a heavy object in another person.
Đỡ lấy món quà. (Catch a gift).
Đỡ bao gạo cho mẹ. (Help mother carry rice bags.)
Đỡ (Verb):Do things to prevent things that can cause harm and loss to you.
Đỡ quả bóng (Catch the ball)
Đỡ đạn (Block bullets)
Đỡ (Verb): Helps somewhat to reduce difficulties and confusion.
Con bé đã biết đỡ bố mẹ việc nhà. (She already knows how to help her parents with housework).
Cô ấy nói đỡ cho anh ấy. (She said to help him).
Đỡ (Adjunct – Dialect) temporarily, while there is no better way.
Nếu không có bút bi, em hãy dùng đỡ bút chì. (If you don’t have a ballpoint pen, use a pencil instead).
