HOW TO USE THE STRUCTURE “TUY…NHƯNG” IN VIETNAMESE

The structure “Tuy … nhưng …” express a contrasting and unexpected relationship in cause-and-effect. 

“Tuy” can be translated in English as “Although”

“Nhưng” can be translated in English as “But”

 

“Tuy…nhưng” is usually placed in between two sentences or two clauses in a sentence. It is used to express opposition, comparison or opposition between two pieces of information in a sentence. In other words, “tuy…nhưng…”” is used to join two opposing ideas or to express that even though something happens, the result or action still happens.

 

Example: 

  • Tuy nhà xa, nhưng An không bao giờ đi học muộn. (Although the house is far away, but An is never late to school.)
  • Tuy hôm nay tôi bị hỏng xe, nhưng tôi vẫn đến lớp đúng giờ. ( Although my car broke down today, I still got to class on time.)

 

In the two examples above, “Tuy…nhưng…” is placed in the middle of the sentence to define a contrast or objection between being away from home and not being late for school, and between having a car breakdown and still arriving to class on time.

 

The relation “Tuy…nhưng…” is often used to indicate contrast, to mark the contrast of meaning between two parts of a sentence. Here are some appropriate contexts for using the word relation the structure “tuy…nhưng…”

 

  1. Describe the contrast between two pieces of information:

-Tuy tôi đã học rất chăm chỉ, nhưng tôi không đạt được kết quả cao. (Although I studied very hard, I did not achieve high results.)

– Tuy nhà bạn rất nhỏ, nhưng nó được bày trí rất gọn gàng và tiện nghi. (Although your house is very small, it is decorated very neatly and comfortably.)

 

  1. State an opposite condition in a sentence:

– Tuy nhưng bạn có rất nhiều thời gian, nhưng bạn không muốn làm việc. (Although you have a lot of time, but you don’t want to work.)

– Tuy hôm nay trời mưa, nhưng tôi vẫn muốn đi dạo. (Although it’s raining today, I still want to go for a walk.)

  1. Express surprise in a sentence:

– Tuy cháu nhỏ tuổi, nhưng cô bé đã thể hiện sự thông minh và đáng yêu của mình. (Although she is young, she has shown her intelligence and cuteness.) 

Note, in the use cases of “tuy…nhưng…”, it is necessary to pay attention to the wording to keep the sentence complete and logical.
