Vietnamese usually speak about a date in this order: day – month – year (ngày, tháng, năm).
Vietnamese usually add the element “mồng” or “mùng” before days from 1 to 10.
- For example:
10–2–1993: ngày mồng mười, tháng hai, năm một nghìn chín trăm chín mươi ba
11–10–2006: ngày mười một, tháng mười, năm hai nghìn không trăm linh sáu.
- There are 12 months in a year. They are:
We can also use the word “Tháng Giêng” for January and “Tháng Chạp” for December (according to the lunar calendar).
– Question: “….(ngày) mùng mấy?” is used to ask about the date from 1 to 10.
- For example:
– Hôm nay là ngày mùng mấy? (What day is today’s date?)
– Hôm nay là ngày mùng 5. (Today is the 5th.)
– Question: “….(ngày) bao nhiêu?” is used to ask about the date above 10.
- For example:
– Hôm nay là ngày bao nhiêu? (What is today’s date?)
– Hôm nay là ngày 18. (Today is the 18th.)
