HOW TO USE “VẪN, CÒN” IN VIETNAMESE

• “Vẫn”, “còn” are adverbs preceding a main verb, and they can be translated as “still” in English.
• “Vẫn” is the word denoting the continuation, continuing as before of a certain action, state, or quality without any change, at the time of speaking.

• Tôi vẫn ở khách sạn Dân Chủ. (I am still in the Dan Chu hotel.)
• Trời vẫn tối. (It’s still dark.)
• He is still in Hanoi. (Anh ấy vẫn còn ở Hà Nội.)

• “Còn” is the word indicating the continuation, continuation of an action, a state until a certain time

– Tôi còn học tiếng Việt ở Việt Nam. (I am still studying Vietnamese in Vietnam.)

– Cô ấy còn rất trẻ nhưng đã có rất nhiều thành công. (She is very young but has had a lot of success)

• Sometimes both of them are used together with the same meaning, for example:

• Trời khuya rồi mà chị ấy vẫn còn thức để học bài. (It’s late and she’s still up to study)
