Positive sentences

The verb “là” is the most basic verb that every learner has to know when they learn Vietnamese for the first time. But it’s not easy to make a right sentence with this verb because it’s not the same as the verb “to be” in English

− Tên tôi là Minh Chung.

→ My name is Minh Chung.

− Tôi là giáo viên Tiếng Việt.

→ I’m a Vietnamese teacher.

− Tôi là tỷ phú.

→ I’m a billionaire

Negative sentences

“không phải” is the negative word, followed by the link-verb “là”

− Tôi không phải là học sinh, tôi là giáo viên

→ I am not a student, I am a teacher

− Anh Nam không phải là giám đốc

→ Mr Nam is not a director

− Tôi là người Hàn Quốc không phải là người Việt Nam

→ I’m Korean, not Vietnamese

Positive question

The phrase “phải không” is used at the end of a sentence to form a tag question

Anh là giáo viên phải không? → You are a teacher, aren’t you?

Vâng, tôi là giáo viên tiếng Việt Yes, I am a Vietnamese teacher

Anh là người Mỹ, phải không? → You are American, aren’t you?

Không, tôi không phải là người Mỹ No, I am an American
