“Thiếu”, “đủ”, “thừa” function as adjectives.
- “Thiếu”means: having or reaching below the required amount or level, below the required level. It can be translated as “don’t have enough” in English.
- “ Đủ” can be translated as “enough” in English, it means have the required amount or degree of fulfillment, neither less nor more.
- “Thừa” have or reach an amount above the required amount. It can be translated as “more than enough” in English.
For example:
– Số tiền này đủ để mua một chiếc xe máy. (This amount of money is enough to buy a motorbike.)
– Tôi thiếu tiền mua ô tô. (I don’t have enough money to buy a car.)
– Số tiền này thừa để mua một chiếc vô tuyến. (This amount of money is more than enough to buy a television. )
– Quyền từ điển này giá 130.000 đồng. Tôi chỉ có 120.000 đồng. Tôi thiếu 10.000 đồng để mua quyển này. (This dictionary is 130.000 dong. I have only 120.000 dong. So I need 10.000 to buy it. )
– Quyển sách này giá 40.000 đồng. Tôi có 40.000 đồng. Tôi có đủ tiền để mua quyền sách này. (This book is 40.000 dong. I have 40.000 dong. I have enough money to buy it.)
