HOW TO USE THE WORD “LẠI” IN VIETNAMESE

• Verb + “lại”: indicates the normal repetition of an action.

Example: 

• Vâng, tôi sẽ gọi lại (Yes, I will call back.)
• Bây giờ tôi sẽ làm lại báo cáo. ( Now I will redo the report.)

• “Lại” + verb: emphasize the repetition of an action.

Example: 

• Buổi sáng ông ấy gọi, buổi chiều ông ấy lại gọi. (In the morning he calls, in the afternoon he calls again.)
• Hôm qua tôi đã đến trường, ngày mai tôi lại đến.  (Yesterday I went to school, tomorrow I come again.)

• Lại + verb + lại: further emphasize the repetition of an action. or show displeasure about the repetition of the action.

Example: 

• Buổi chiều tôi lại gọi lại nhé! (I’ll call you back in the afternoon!)

Note: If the auxiliary verb “phải” comes before the verb, the conjugation will be:

“Lại” + “phải” + Verb  + lại.

Example: Tôi lại phải làm lại bài tập số 4. ( I have to do exercise number 4 again.)
