HOW TO USE THE WORD “RẤT, QUÁ, LẮM” IN VIETNAMESE

“Rất, quá, lắm” are adverbs of degree, and often accompany adjectives, adverbs or modal verbs to indicate the highest degree of quality or quantity. They have the same meaning but differences in usage, all of them can be translated as “very” in English. 

• Rất: precedes adjectives, adverbs, modal verbs, and is often used in written language or in a formal situation. For example:

Example:

–  Anh nói tiếng Việt rất giỏi. (You speak Vietnamese very well.)

– Tôi rất thích uống cà phê. (I like to drink coffee very much.)

• Lắm: follows adjectives, adverbs or modal verbs, and is often used in spoken language

Example:

– Anh nói tiếng Việt giỏi lắm.(You speak Vietnamese very well.)

– Tôi thích uống cà phê lắm.( I like to drink coffee very much.)

• Quá: follows adjectives, adverbs or modal verbs, and is often used in spoken language to express an exclamatory.

Example:

– Ô! Anh nói tiếng Việt giỏi quá! (Oh! You speak Vietnamese so well! )
