How to use “Mặc dù…nhưng…” in Vietnamese

In Vietnamese, there are many pairs of words used to describe cause and effect. The pair of words “mặc dù…nhưng…” are similar. Read this article to understand how to use this word pair.

I. GRAMMAR

This structure expresses a surprising result in a cause-and-effect relationship. The actual situation after “nhưng” is the opposite of the expected result. It emphasizes that “the fact happens anyway”. 

 

II. HOW TO USE

Note: Clause 1 has the opposite meaning to clause 2.

 

Example: Mặc dù tôi đã sống ở đây 2 năm nhưng tôi không biết rõ giao thông ở đây.

(Although I have lived here for 2 years, I don’t know the traffic here well.)

 

Clause 1: Tôi đã sống ở đây 2 năm. ( I have lived here for 2 years)

Clause 2: Tôi không biết rõ giao thông ở đây ( I don’t know the traffic here well)

 

  • You can use “mặc dù…” after the result clause. In this case, “nhưng’ can be omitted.

 

Note:

Clause 1: Indicates the effect.

Clause 2: Indicates the cause.

 

Example: Tôi đã cố gắng trở về nhà mặc dù trời mưa rất to.

(I tried to come back home even though it was raining heavily).

 

Clause 1: Tôi đã cố gắng trở về nhà (I tried to come back home).

Clause 2: Trời mưa rất to (It was raining heavily).

 

III. EXAMPLE

  • Mặc dù tôi đã khuyên anh ấy từ bỏ thuốc lá nhưng anh ấy vẫn tiếp tục sử dụng.(Although I advised him to give up smoking, he continued to use it).
  • Mặc dù trời mưa nhưng tôi vẫn quyết định ra công viên chạy bộ. (Although it was raining, I still decided to go to the park for a run).
  • Tôi không thể làm được bài thi mặc dù đã ôn bài rất nhiều. (I couldn’t pass the test even though I studied a lot).
