More and more is a common phrase used to express a gradual increase or intensification of something. In Vietnamese, we have a similar expression which is “Càng…càng/ngày càng/càng ngày càng”. This phrase is used to indicate that as one thing increases or happens more, another thing also increases or happens more in response.
1. Grammar note – example:
In Vietnamese, càng… càng… is similar to “the more… the more…” in English. Càng is placed before a verb or an adjective used to express the increase in character or state of two processes having a cause-effect relationship.
- Note: càng ngày càng is used to emphasize, it means more than ngày càng. “ngày càng” can be placed at the beginning of a sentence or before the verb. It is more formal and used more in written Vietnamese.
2. Pratice – Luyện tâp:
Match A with B and practice speaking with the structure “càng ngày càng” /“ngày càng”
Mẫu : Thời tiết – nóng. Thời tiết Hà Nội ngày càng nóng.
3. Conversation – hội thoại:
Lan: Cháu chào ông ạ.
Ông Lan: Lan đấy à? Vào nhà đi cháu…
Lan: Vâng ạ. Cháu chào Bà ạ. Bà ơi, bà có khỏe không ? Bà có ăn được nhiều không?
Bà Lan: Bà ăn ít lắm.
Ông Lan: Bà cháu càng ngày bà càng yếu đi đấy.
Lan: Bây giờ trời càng ngày càng lạnh, bà cẩn thận bà nhé
Lan: Ừ. Bà biết rồi. Cháu gái bà càng lớn càng đẹp.
Thế bố mẹ cháu có khỏe không ?
Lan: Dạ, bình thường ạ. Bà ơi, bác Nam có khỏe không ạ ?
Bà Lan: Khỏe. Lát nữa cháu đi thăm cùng bà nhé.
