HOW TO USE THE STRUCTURE “CẢ…LẪN” IN VIETNAMESE

This structure is used to link two coequal elements of a sentence, the meaning is similar to the word “và” and used to emphasize the meaning.

When the user wants to mention two objects that are isotopic to each other and wants to emphasize the meaning of “both”, we use the structure “cả…lẫn”.

“Cả + A+ lẫn + B” plays the role of subject or object in the sentence.

When “Cả + A + lẫn + B” plays the role of subject, it’s usually followed by “đều”.

Example:

 – Cả tiếng Việt lẫn tiếng Anh đều không khó. (Both Vietnamese and English are not difficult.)

 – Tôi đọc cả báo tiếng Việt lẫn báo tiếng Anh. (I read both Vietnamese and English newspapers.)

– Cả tôi lẫn mẹ tôi đều thích ăn những món ăn Hàn Quốc. (Both my mother and I love to eat Korean food.)

– Anh ấy có thể đạt điểm tuyệt đối cả môn Văn lẫn môn Toán. (He can get perfect scores in both Literature and Math.)

 Note:

“Cả + A + lẫn + B “can be used in both spoken and written language. “Cả + A+ cả + B” can be used in spoken language.
